We Care is THE resource for our area!

We Care offers over 25 programs and pantries to meet the needs of our community.  
We are 100% funded through community contributions.

Primarily serving the West side of Van Buren county, in the communities of South Haven, Covert, Bangor, Bloomingdale, Breedsville, Grand Junction, Lacota, and Glenn.  If you are from another area and need help, please give the office a call - all are welcome (269-637-4342).

We Care offers the following resources for our communities.

These are not all the opportunities and resources We Care has, but are a just some of the ways we can help.

FOOD PANTRIES:

  • 1st Congregational Church

    • 651 Phoenix St., South Haven

    • Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 10 a.m. - Noon

    • Primarily serving families and individuals in South Haven, Covert, Bangor, Glenn, Lacota, Grand Junction, and Breedsville.

    • Clients are only able to access the pantry once a week.

  • Lily of the Valley Church

    • 30600 M-140, just North of Downtown Covert

    • Wednesdays, 12 noon - 2 p.m.

    • Serving families and individuals in Covert.

    • Clients should register through We Care and can go once a month.

  • Sacred Heart Catholic Church

    • 201 S. Walnut St., Bangor  

    • Thursdays, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

    • Serves Bangor residents, Bangor Townships residents, and Bangor School Families.

    • Clients can go once a month.

Items Needed: proteins, complete meals (i.e.: spaghetti sauce and noodles), beans and rice, bread, tortillas, fruits and veggies, shelf-stable items (i.e.: canned goods, boxed milk, etc.), peanut butter, jelly, cereals.

FOOD PANTRIES

HARBOR OF HOPE SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH (769 Pipestone Road | Benton Harbor, MI)

Provides food to those in need. Serves: Berrien County

SAINT AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY EPISCOPAL CHURCH (1753 Union Avenue | Benton Harbor, MI)

Provides a supplemental neighborhood food pantry for residents of Benton Harbor in need.

Serves: Berrien County

SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY - FOOD WAREHOUSE

(331 Miller Street | Benton Harbor, MI)  

Offers an emergency food that can be accessed once per quarter to individuals or families in need. Based on availability, pantry offers personal hygiene products, toilet paper, laundry soap and diapers in addition to food.

Serves: Berrien, Cass and Van Buren counties

CATHOLIC COMMUNITY CENTER (346 Catalpa Avenue | Benton Harbor, MI)

Provides emergency food and personal care items. Serves: Berrien, Cass, Van Buren Counties

SALVATION ARMY - BENTON HARBOR CORPS (233 Michigan Street | Benton Harbor, MI)

Provides emergency food from the pantry to those in need.

Serves: Berrien County (with the exception of Niles, Berrien Springs and Buchanan)

SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH (140 Seneca Road | Benton Harbor, MI)

Provides a food pantry to local residents in need. This service does NOT deliver food.

Serves: Benton Harbor and surrounding areas

LIVING WATER FOOD PANTRY (7734 Paw Paw Avenue | Watervliet, MI)

Provides a food pantry service to those families with food insecurities. Personal hygiene items are given out periodically. There is a restriction that food is provided for one household per person.

Serves: Allegan, Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties

SAINT JOSEPH SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH (1201 Maiden Lane | Saint Joseph, MI)

Provides food pantry services to members of the church as well as the surrounding community of Berrien County. Pantry does NOT offer meat. Serves: Berrien County

NEIGHBOR TO NEIGHBOR (9147 US 31 N | Berrien Springs, MI)

Client Services - FOOD; Provides food assistance to those in need. Clients can return, if in need, once every three months. Serves: Berrien, Cass and Van Buren Counties

CARING CUPBOARD AT WOODLAND SHORES (3555 Shawnee Road | Bridgman, MI)

Provides mobile pantry and pre-order pantry services. Food and human dignity items offered depending on availability at time of order. Serves: Bridgman, Baroda, Stevensville, Glendora, New Troy, Sawyer, or Saint Joseph.

VALLEY FAMILY CHURCH (2500 Vincent Avenue | Portage, MI)

Offers a supplemental food pantry for anyone in need. Pantry often has protein items, fresh produce and milk.

Serves: Allegan, Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, Van Buren Counties

Baby Item Pantry

  • Peace Lutheran Church

    • 06321 Blue Star Hwy, South Haven

    • Open daily, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

    • Clients MUST REGISTER WITH WE CARE before going and can go once a month.

  • Simpson United Methodist Church

    • Joy Street, Bangor

    • Tuesdays, 10 a.m. - 12 Noon

    • Clients MUST REGISTER WITH WE CARE before going and can go once a month.

  • Lily of the Valley

    • 30600 M 140 HWY, Covert

    • Wednesday, Noon - 2 p.m.

    • Clients MUST call the central office to register and can go once a month.

Items Needed: Diapers, all sizes (larger sizes go quickly), pull-ups for special needs kids, baby wipes, lotions and creams.

PERSONAL HYGIENE PANTRIES:

  • First Assembly of God Church
    06500 Blue Star Hwy., South Haven

    • Wednesdays, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

    • Clients MUST register through We Care and can go once every 3 months.

    214 Walnut St., Bangor

    • Tuesdays, 10 - Noon

    • Clients MUST register through We Care and can go once every 3 months.

Items Needed:Laundry detergent, bar soap, body wash, toilet paper, cleaning supplies, paper towels, toothpaste, razors (men’s and women’s), shaving cream, and feminine products.

CLOTHING, FURNITURE AND HOUSEWARES

  • Clothing is now available at our Personal Care Pantry. If you're in need, you MUST get a referral from We Care (can go once a season).

  • Furniture is available through a We Care and Habitat for Humanity ReStore voucher. You must call the We Care office for a referral/voucher (one per year).

Items Accepted: Clean and gently used clothes and shoes, new clothes, pots and pans, plates, sheets and bedding, blankets and children’s items.

MEDICAL EQUIPMENT LOAN PROGRAM  

  • Coordinated through the We Care office(s)

  • Open to anyone, of any age or income

  • FREE medical equipment loaned on a first-come, first-serve basis

  • Keep it as long as you need it. Then return it.

Items Accepted: light-weight wheelchairs, walkers with seats, bath chairs, shower seats, bedside commodes, toilet risers, walker or wheelchair bags, canes and bed pads. NO ELECTRIC ITEMS (i.e.: blood pressure monitor, feed tubes, C-Pap machines, electric wheelchairs, hospital beds, etc.) and NO CRUTCHES (we have too many currently).

UTILITY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

  • Coordinated through the We Care office.

  • Anyone who is having a difficult time paying their utilities bills are invited to stop by and see how We Care can help.  

  • The most complicated and intense program, We Care coordinates over 15 other agencies to ensure each bill is paid in full.

  • Seasonal - October 1 - May 31.

Funds accepted all year! Volunteers needed during the month of February each year.

TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY

  • GAS VOUCHER for emergency work, school or doctors appointments for life threatening conditions, i.e.: chemotherapy or dialysis.

  • FREE Rides through VB Transit

Funds accepted all year to provide much needed transportation.

NEW!!!!  BILL ASSISTANCE MINISTRY

  • Generous donors have given financially to We Care in order to provide assistance for those facing difficulty paying their bills.  

  • You must be able to prove need (financial, illness, circumstantial, etc.)

  • Give our office a call to see if you qualify!

Funds accepted all year to provide basic necessities for families.

SEASONAL PROGRAMS

  • Stock the School's Fun Fair.

  • HOLIDAY MEAL BASKETS

    • Coordinated through the We Care Office; Sign up begins October 1st for both those in need and for donors.

  • HOLIDAY GIFTS

    • Coordinated through the We Care Office; Sign up begins October 1st for both those in need and for donors.

  • SHOWER MINISTRY with Hope Reformed Church. We Care provides the towels and toiletries, Hope provides the shower. Call We Care to register.

  • RAMPIN' FOR JESUS - As needed basis

    • Ramps for those of any age with a medical need; coordinate also with Senior Services

  • HOUSING AND EMERGENCY SHELTER

    • Partnership with Holland Rescue Mission for Emergency Shelter; free gas card or ride to the shelter for those in need. For more information click here.

    • Partnership with Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency to provide housing assistance resources for those in need in Van Buren County through HARA. For more information click here.

  • HISPANIC MINISTRY AND MIGRANT OUTREACH

    • The We Care office has a Spanish-speaking associate who works diligently with our Hispanic and/or Migrant worker families to make sure their unique needs are met.
