Jackie called the We Care office because she was broken-hearted and didn’t know where to turn. A friend told her to call We Care because “they can help.” She called us looking for assistance with funeral expenses as her daughter just passed away. After talking with her, getting to know her and her situation, we quickly realized she needed more than just funeral expenses. Along with dealing with her grief, she needed emotional support, clothing to wear to the funeral, and orthopedic shoes. Due to her health conditions, she didn’t have any shoes that fit. Jackie also takes care of her other daughter, Fran, who has mental and physical health issues. Due to her care, Jackie is emotionally exhausted and her case grew with every conversation our staff had with her. We found out she does not have a car so she is limited in where she could go and when. We worked with her to figure out how we could assist, and what other organizations could help as well. We were able to get her set up with clothing, shoes, help with the funeral, medical equipment, food, deliveries and transportation. A volunteer took care of other items that were needed so that she and her family were cared for during this difficult time.
One of our staff members saw Jackie at a local store just a few days ago, and it was a true delight. Her face was filled with appreciation and joy, and her eyes glistened with thankful tears as she told our staff member, “You’ll never, ever know the difference you made. Thank you for all you did for me. I couldn’t have survived this crisis without you. God bless you – and everyone at We Care.” This chance meeting reminded us of why we do this work. It’s not about us – but about being the hands and feet of Christ wherever we are placed in this life.
