It was Katie's seventh birthday. and she woke up excited - until she couldn't turn on the light in her room. She got dressed in the dark, then was met with warm milk for her cereal. Her mom took her hand and they went to the We Care office. When they got there, Katie's mom said through tears, "Our power was shut off this morning," and began weeping. Scared and worried, Katie snuck off to a corner of the office, trying to disappear. The We Care staff and volunteers comforted Katie and her mom, offering a listening ear, tissues, a cup of tea all with a warm smile.
Not only were the staff able to get the electricity paid and turned back on, but they were able to go to the food pantry to restock what they had lost in their refrigerator. Katie smiled ear-to-ear after receiving a new pink sweatshirt, a comfy blanket, and a new toothbrush and toothpaste from the Baby Pantry. And thanks to an anonymous donor, she was given a $10 gift card to McDonald's to enjoy a special lunch on her birthday.
Katie left our office with the best gift of all - the knowledge that she wasn't alone and that someone cared.
